Attendance

​

Absence due to schedule conflicts

        -    Regular attendance at flute lesson ensures that students will experience more success than if attendance is irregular. However, situations arise that sometimes make it difficult or impossible to attend. If you need to miss a lesson, it is important that you give me at least 24 hours notice if at all possible. Sometimes the lesson can be re-scheduled, but due to the size of my class this is not a guarantee.  Although not ideal, a FaceTime or Zoom lesson can also be scheduled.

 Lessons cancelled at the last minute (less than 24 hours notice) for non-emergency reasons cannot be refunded.

   

 Illness and emergencies (accident or illness, family emergencies, etc.)

        -    Due to the nature of emergency situations (accident or illness, family emergencies, etc.) it is understood that 24 hours notice cannot always be given. Every effort to accommodate you if something like this should arise. If a student is ill, please stay home. In the case of mild illness, a FaceTime or Zoom lesson can often be scheduled. This will keep my studio a safe place for everyone. Sharing bugs is not fun!

 

Note: Lessons will be held on Pro-D Days, however it may be possible to re-schedule the lesson to earlier in the day if you wish. Lessons that fall on statutory holidays (Thanksgiving, Easter Monday, Family Day, Remembrance Day, etc.) will be dealt with on an individual basis.

 

​Performance Opportunities

 

Sharing music with others is one of the joys of being able to play an instrument. There will be various opportunities to participate in performances throughout the school year. Below are some of the performance opportunities available.

 BC Registered Music Teachers concerts
 

As a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association, I am entitled to place my students in concerts put on by the BCRMTA. There are 6 of these concerts per year, and they are held on Saturday afternoons. More information will be available as the year progresses. The Flute Studio will cover the cost of the accompanist for these concerts

Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival
 

The Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival is held every year during the months of April and May. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain some performing experience, hear other students play in a safe educational environment and get feedback from an adjudicator. For advanced students, there is also the opportunity to participate at the provincial level. Participation in this event is highly encouraged. Entry fees and accompanist fees are the responsibility of the student for this event.

 

Year end Concert

 

At the end of the school year there will be a final concert for all students. This is one last opportunity to perform for family and friends and say good-bye for the summer. Participation in this concert is expected of all students.

 

​Royal College of Music Exams

 

The Royal College of Music in Toronto offers exams to help students mark their progress on their instrument. If you are interested in taking an RCM Exam, please let me know at the beginning of the fall term so that technical requirements and repertoire can be planned in advance. Exams can occur at almost any time during the year and the first 4 levels are offered in an online format. An accompanist is necessary for the repertoire portion. Students taking RCM Exams are responsible for their own accompanist and exam fees.

​Accompanists            

 

An accompanist is required for most performances. The Flute Studio will provide an accompanist for BC Registered Music Teachers Concerts and the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival if the pieces being performed are from Suzuki Books 1-4 or RCM Grades 1-4. Students who are performing music at an advanced level at these events are responsible for getting their own accompanist and I have a list of contacts to help with this. An accompanist will be provided by The Flute Studio for the year-end studio recital in June.

Group Classes

 

Group instruction (levels 1-4) provides opportunities such as ensemble playing, that are not available in individual lessons. Making new friends, performing for peers, and having fun with music are all important aspects of group instruction. Group classes are available in addition to the private lesson and attendance at Group is highly encouraged. Group classes are held on a bi-weekly basis.
